History
United Methodists have their origins in the ministry of John Wesley and Francis Asbury.
Wesley, ordained in the Church of England, had not planned to found to a new church, but Methodism soon spread through the British Isles and to America. Some 80 preachers, many of them unordained "circuit riders," were leading about 15,000 Methodists as the American Revolution ended. The Yellow Springs United Methodist Church began in the 1830s as a part of a circuit.
The United Methodist Church today is a merger of former Methodist and United Brethern denominations.
